How to send and receive free SMS messages to any cell phone using IM clients or email. Blind and sighted!

This is going to be a blog post on how to send and receive free SMS messages from your IM clients. This is very useful to blind people and the jaws screen reader. Below are steps and links to the things I talk about in the video. Enjoy! Below them will be some side notes too!

1. Get a Google voice account. www.google.com/voice

2. sign up for GVMAX. https://www.gvmax.com/signup

3. download Miranda IM, or use any client that supports Google talk. This one is best for blind people. http://www.miranda-im.org/download/

4. get the speak plugin and download it and install it. http://addons.miranda-im.org/details.php?action=viewfile&id=214

5. start up Miranda.

6. In the new account creation, select add new account. When you do that select the jabber protocol. After you do that, select the Google talk option when you click on the jabber account you just made.

7. Select the Google talk server. Enter your user name without the email address and also enter your password.

8. Save the settings.

9. Now start giving out your Google voice number to everyone! Enjoy!

SIDE NOTES.

1. If you don't want to use an IM client you can just have it forward to your email address.

2. The old jaws scripts do work on the new Miranda builds. I don't know about system access yet. I've never used it. I use NVDA. I also just use the speak plugin above.

3. Sometimes the GVMAX server will not be able to forward any of the messages you send or try to receive. You can just use your email client to answer messages.

Well, that's all for now! If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask me. Thank you all and have a great weekend!
